
Austrian tenor saxophonist, composer, musicologist, educator, and critic Dr. Lukas Gabric has been hailed by Thomas Gansch and Joel Frahm as a “master musician” with “breathtaking tenor virtuosity.” He has established himself as a prominent figure on the international jazz scene through performances, recordings, and teaching engagements spanning Austria, the USA, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Spain, Slovenia, China, South Korea, Mongolia, Serbia, Brazil, and beyond.
Dr. Gabric’s early promise was recognized in 2012 when he joined the European Generations Unit at the prestigious Festival in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, studying with jazz masters Louis Hayes, Peter Washington, and David Hazeltine. In 2013, he was named a semifinalist in the renowned Thelonious Monk Competition in Washington, D.C. His growing acclaim continued with a Best Soloist Award and Audience Choice Award at Spain’s Getxo Jazz Festival, along with third prize at the North American Saxophone Alliance Competition. In 2016, ASCAP honored him with the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award for his composition Fire Dance.
In 2018, Dr. Gabric received the Cultural Distinction Award and the Bruno Gironcoli Award from his hometown of Villach, Austria, supporting the production of his album Labor of Love, which received international critical acclaim. In 2026, the City of Villach awarded him the prestigious Kultur-Ehrenzeichen (Cultural Honor Medal) in recognition of his international artistic, scholarly, and pedagogical achievements. His discography spans more than fifteen albums and collaborations, including Migrations (Naxos, 2019), a GRAMMY-nominated recording in the category of Best Contemporary Classical Composition. His latest album, In Flux, was released through Global Gate Music.
Dr. Gabric holds an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School and a Ph.D. in Musicology from City University of New York. He taught for six years at Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program (MAP) pre-college division and for eight years at City College of New York, where he served as an adjunct lecturer in music. His doctoral research presents a neo-Schenkerian- and Formenlehre-informed analysis of the blues-based works of John Coltrane.
A dedicated educator and scholar, Dr. Gabric has given lectures and masterclasses internationally and is the author of several pedagogical books and scholarly publications. His instructional books include The Rhythm Changes Guide published through Sher Music and Five Strategies for Developing Modern Jazz Vocabulary published through Mel Bay. His scholarly work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Jazz Studies and Jazz Perspectives, as well as the Austrian cultural journal Brücke. In recognition of his pedagogical work, he received the “Extraordinary Dedication and Achievement in Teaching Distinction” from the American Protégé International Competition at Carnegie Hall and the “Recognition for the Contribution to Excellence in Music Pedagogy” from the Music and Stars International Competition.
Since 2018, he has directed the Carinthian International Jazz Award, an international competition that has attracted participants from more than forty countries.
Alongside his work in jazz and academia, Dr. Gabric has become one of the most in-demand saxophonists in China across multiple musical genres, performing with leading Asian pop artists including Sam Lee (李圣杰). He is a Henri SELMER Paris and D’Addario Woodwinds artist and currently serves as Associate Professor at Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, China.
